Band Baaja Baaraat is an Indian film written and directed by Zoya Akhtar. The film stars Farhan Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Arjun Rampal and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead roles. It was released on 14 February 2017, as a tribute to 40 years of Hindi cinema after its release it topped the box office charts for 12 weeks and broke many records including highest opening day collection during its first weekend. The story tells about the love affair between a rich industrialist's son and middle-class girl who both come from different worlds but find each other at last through music and cultural events in Mumbai. It is produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment. Baaraat (the groom's procession) is the main theme of the movie. There are three types of baraats in India - Aggarwals, Kapadias and Marwari-Marathas. The Aggarwal Baaraat comprises people from the Potraj caste who are believed to come from Sindh in Pakistan bringing along with them their unique tradition of dancing at weddings. There are also the Kapadia baraat that comes from Gujarat and they perform dances based on Sufi culture. The Marwari Baraat, which is still very popular in India, is mostly seen in the northern part of the country. They wear caftans and traditional headgear and dance to popular Marathi tunes. Middle class teenagers from Mumbai go to watch the Maratha baraat at Bandra's Azad Maidan every year.The film did well at box office and after its announcement it did show good response from people all over India and did break records and did top the box office charts for 12 weeks during its 1st week of release. The film collected more than on its opening day. Band Baaja Baaraat received generally positive reviews from critics. At the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 76% based on 6 reviews, and an average rating of 6.5/10. Raja Sen of "Rediff" gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars saying that "Azad's superb dialogue is what makes 'Baaraat' come alive". Namrata Joshi of "Outlook India" also gave it 4 out of 5 stars and said that ""Baaraat" is a delightful trend-setter for Bollywood in trend-setting times. It is a film of its times that has been able to explain the psyches of today’s youth without being preachy about it". Indiaglitz gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars and said that "The whole first half is a chore to sit through. But, as the story evolves, the tempo picks up. The movie gets really interesting during interval and climax."
